You walk into the office, take one look around, and feel… out of place. Sound familiar?

I’ve been there, and I know how overwhelming it can be to decode the unspoken rules of corporate attire, especially when you don’t see anyone who looks like you. Dressing for the workplace isn’t just about the clothes—it’s about understanding workplace skills, navigating expectations, and figuring out how to stand out without feeling like you stick out.

But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to feel this way forever. Let’s talk about how to master corporate dress codes while staying true to yourself. It takes time, but you GOT IT!

Step 1: Workplace Skill #1 Don’t Lose Yourself

Early on, the easiest move is to imitate the room. Trust me, we all start here. Whether you’re in a boardroom of sharp suits or an office where jeans are the norm, observing and matching what’s the “norm” can help you feel like you have an understanding of the unwritten rules.

But blending in doesn’t mean erasing yourself. Add small touches that feel you, like a bold lipstick, a signature necklace, or even a textured hairstyle. These details will make you memorable while showing you respect the environment.

Step 2: Learn to Read the Room

Understanding your company’s dress code goes beyond clothes. It’s about tuning into the culture. Are leaders always buttoned up, or do they show up in sneakers and hoodies? These cues tell you what’s valued—structure or creativity, tradition or innovation.

Here’s where it gets REAL & fun: once you’ve become comfortable with the culture. Rewrite the rules. I’ve walked into meetings in bold prints and vibrant accessories, and I’ve worn my natural hair to conferences where I was one of the only Black women in the room.

Confidence is your best accessory. When you’re comfortable in your own skin—and your own style—others will notice and respect your choices.
