The Corporate Curly · The Hiring Board
Companies hiring now: where the jobs are this month.
A plain-language read of the U.S. jobs report for professionals deciding where to spend their next four weeks—not another headline telling you the market is “good” or “bad.”

Four numbers worth carrying into September.
The headline improved. Search duration did not. Read both before changing your strategy.
How to read this page: BLS figures describe the national labor market, not a promise that a listed company or role is hiring. “TCC read” marks our editorial interpretation; the linked source shows the underlying data.

The rebound is real. It is also concentrated.
Two categories supplied 101,000 of August’s 162,000 added jobs. That is the signal beneath the headline.
01
A strong month, but a narrow one
BLS fact + TCC readRestaurants and bars added 59,000 jobs and local government education added 42,000—together, about 62% of the month’s total. June and July were also revised up by 55,000 combined. The recovery is meaningful, but it is not evenly distributed across corporate work.
02
Health care is still a durable lane
BLS fact + TCC readHealth care added 13,000 jobs, below its 32,000 monthly average over the prior year. Gains came from home health and hospitals. For operators and program professionals, the sector remains worth working—but expect a slower loop than last spring.
03
Deprioritize information—don’t disappear
BLS fact + TCC readInformation shed 23,000 jobs, nearly triple its recent monthly loss. If you work in media, content, or communications, spend less of September on cold applications in-sector and more on adjacent employers in health care, insurance, and public services.
04
Build a pipeline that can last
BLS fact + TCC readBlack unemployment improved to 6.0%, including 5.6% for Black women age 20 and over. At the same time, 43% of unemployed people had been searching 15 weeks or longer. More hiring does not mean a short search; track runway, relationships, and next steps. If the search is stalling, use the search-stage diagnostic before changing everything at once.
More people got hired. The ones who didn’t are waiting longer.

05 · The monthly plan
September, five moves.
Set the plan once, then work it for roughly three focused hours a week until the October edition lands.
- Week 1Pick two sectorsChoose two expanding or holding lanes that match your transferable experience. Let those two choices govern the month.
- Week 1Build a six-employer watchlistStart with this month’s list, then use the 30-company target-list method to expand it and verify openings on each employer’s own career page.
- Weeks 2–3Submit two strong applications a weekTailor the top of your résumé to the posting’s actual language. Track role, date, contact, and next step.
- Weeks 2–3Send one warm message a weekChoose someone who knows your work. If you are unsure who can advocate, read the mentor-versus-sponsor guide, then make a specific referral request tied to a verified opening.
- Week 4Audit pipeline and runwayReview the numbers before the next report arrives. If the list is thin, change the target—not only the volume.
